Calorie Bargain: Turkey Bacon
Even my most devoted vegan and vegetarian friends have to admit that if there's one thing they miss about eating meat, it has to be the bacon. But all you have to do is look at the grease rendered in the frying pan to know why bacon isn't a healthy-diet all-star. That's why one of my favorite Calorie Bargains of all time is turkey bacon. If you haven't made the switch yet, let's look at the numbers:
Pork bacon: 145 calories (1 ounce)
Turkey bacon: 60 calories (1 ounce)
Sure, bacon is delicious, but it's loaded with saturated fat. There are good alternatives to pork bacon, made from turkey, that can satisfy your craving just as well, and for far fewer calories and much less fat. One ounce of cooked turkey bacon contains 60 calories and 1 gram of saturated fat, compared with one ounce of cooked pork bacon, which contains 145 calories and 4 grams of saturated fat. Some brands to try include Louis Rich, Trader Joe's, and Applegate Farms. You'll get the same smoky flavor without the artery-clogging fat.
