Setting a Goal Can Make Your Dream Come True
A while back, there was an ad on television that featured a young woman, a container of yogurt, and a bathing suit hung on a bedroom wall. The woman, yogurt in hand, gazed at the suit as the time-lapsed seasons went by. Finally, summer arrived, and it was time to try the thing on. Theme song: "She wore an itsy bitsy teenie weenie yellow polka-dot bikini." Message: By eating this company's yogurt, you too will be able to fit into an itsy bitsy teenie weenie bikini.
I thought the ad was great (even though I can't remember the brand of yogurt being hawked!) because it illustrated how important motivation is when it comes to weight loss. Whether it's an inspirational item of clothing, like a pair of skinny jeans that you keep in the front of your closet, or a photo of yourself at your best posted on the fridge, having a concrete visual goal is a daily reminder of why you're working so hard to lose weight. A few other great motivators? Saying YES to that class reunion invitation, signing up for a rigorous hiking or biking trip several months in advance, or starting a weight-loss contest at work.
